Soil Carbon In Saltwater Intrusion Environments

We are rethinking agricultural land use to mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise, seasonal storm impact, and soil salinization on coastal farmland.

Subtropical soils have lost their carbon stores due to conversion from wetland to farmland. Encroaching storm surge and flooding severely decrease crop productivity which often results in farm abandonment. We’re working to identify impacted farmland and understand the effects of salinity on soil carbon cycles through soil mapping, land use recommendations and wetland restoration.
